TRON devs propose TIP-6780 upgrade to strengthen EVM alignment with Ethereum

TRON’s core development team has unveiled a strategic proposal, TIP-6780, aimed at modernizing how the blockchain handles contract destruction while ensuring long-term alignment with Ethereum’s changing standards.

Announced today, TIP-6780 builds on the earlier TIP-652, which discouraged dependence on the SELFDESTRUCT Opcode and signaled impending restrictions.

The innovative update mirrors Ethereum’s EIP-6780, reflecting TRON’s commitment to ensuring that builders working across different EVM-based ecosystems interact with consistent behavior.

What does TIP-6780 change?

TIP-6780 reduces the circumstances that trigger full deletion while directing developers to harmless contract lifecycle patterns.

The proposed system will remove contracts’ data, including its storage, code, and account, if users opt for SELFDESTRUCT during the transaction creation.

On the other hand, the contract remains unaltered in all other circumstances.

The opcode will suspend execution and move assets to a designated address without deleting structural data.

Moreover, no burning happens when a contract chooses itself as the specified destination for the transferred tokens.

Also, the proposal increases SELFDESTRUCT’s energy cost from 0 to 5,000 to discourage unnecessary usage. The team stated:

The fixed Energy cost of the SELFDESTRUCT opcode is adjusted from 0 to 5,000. This raises the execution cost to further deter misuse.

Mimicking Ethereum’s evolution is more than a technical choice.

The move is strategic. With EIP-6780-like behavior, TRON aims to simplify the work of developers building wallets, applications, and infrastructure designed to run across several chains.
